In the space of two weeks, you can explore ancient cities, climb dramatic rock fortresses, go on wildlife safaris, drive through tea country, hike in the mountains, and finish with some of the country’s best beaches.
A road trip is one of the best ways to experience it. Instead of staying in one region, you can follow a clockwise route around the island, with each stretch of the journey bringing a noticeably different landscape and experience.

Colombo

Negombo
Just 36 km north of Colombo, Negombo is an easy first stop on the road trip. Sigiriya

If you have two extra days, you can make an optional detour from Ella to Arugam Bay. The route shown on the map places it about 134 km from Ella. Arugam Bay is one of Sri Lanka’s best-known surfing destinations and has a distinctly different atmosphere from the hill country. It is particularly appealing if surfing is a priority, but even non-surfers can enjoy its relaxed beach atmosphere. Because the detour adds time to an already packed two-week itinerary, it makes more sense as an addition rather than trying to squeeze it into the main route. With two extra days, however, it can be a great addition.

Yala National Park
After Ella, the route heads southeast toward Yala National Park, about 60 km away. The scenery changes once again as the cool mountains give way to a warmer, drier landscape. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the possibility of seeing a leopard in the wild is a major reason travelers include Yala in their itinerary. Galle
